WHAT ARE VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION INJECTIONS (AKA LUBRICANT OR ROOSTER COMB)?
At Carolina Nonsurgical Orthopedics, one of the many options we offer is viscosupplementation (gel/H.A.), also called "rooster comb" injections. These injections act as a lubricant inside of the knee joint.
WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE?
Viscosupplementation (Rooster Comb) are generally about 50-60% effective for reducing knee pain based on current studies.
We do offer other orthobiologic treatments with higher success rates, such as PRP, Prolotherapy, and MFAT cell transfers. These treatments have a success rate closer to 80-90% based on current studies.
TYPES OF VISCO INJECTIONS *IMPORTANT*
There are several different brands of viscosupplements. Every year insurance companies change what brand they "prefer". We do not stock every medication. We do have options for patients that require medications other than what we carry in-office and this will be discussed at your new patient appointment after we verify your insurance and your provider decides if visco injections are right for you.
WHAT IS THE COST?
Most insurances "cover" part of the gel injections. However, that does not mean you will not have an out-of-pocket cost. If you have a high deductible, you may get a bill for roughly $300.00 per knee, per injection. If you have any concerns, please check with your insurance prior to treatment.
Carolina Nonsurgical Orthopedics requires a point-of-service deposit (Medicare excluded), which goes towards the cost of the medication and/or the procedure. Most patients might owe additional money once insurance settles the claim after treatment is complete.
We offer a discounted self-pay rate for patients that have high deductible plans, or for those whose insurance denies this procedure.

WHAT IS THE VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION PROCESS?
Process of Requesting a VISCO Injection (Excludes Medicare)
(*Medicare does not require approval and we stock medication for Medicare patients)
1. Upon completion of the appointment paperwork will be completed and faxed to a preferred specialty pharmacy or insurance company based on the patient’s insurance.
2. This process can take 1-4 weeks depending on the insurance plan.
3. Once the injection is approved, we will call the patient to schedule the injections.
4. Some patients will have a per injection cost. This must be paid at each visit.
5. We do not control costs or the time it takes for approval.
Additional Information
-
Required medication brand is subject to change by the insurance company, not our clinic.
-
Injection requests can take 1-4 weeks, or longer. We have no control over how long the process takes once we have submitted the paperwork.
-
If we need to use a specialty pharmacy for your particular brand of medication, the pharmacy will reach out to the patient directly via a Toll Free number. Please answer the call, as the process cannot continue until the patient speaks with the specialty pharmacy.
HOW MANY VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?
They are given in series of three to five injections, one week apart.
IS VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION FOR KNEE PAIN COVERED BY INSURANCE?
Some insurance carriers (including Medicare) will cover a portion of the cost of the injections, although you may have to pay your “percentage” based on whatever type of healthcare plan you carry. We do not estimate this number for patients, so you will need to call your insurance to verify your own benefits.
CASH PRICES: For those patients with high deductibles or those that insurance denies coverage, we do offer a discounted self-pay rate for gel injections.
